Bio

Background and Early Career:

At just 27 Julia Borelli is now one of – if not the leading – female engineer in electronic music with references ranging from Richie Hawtin, Anyma to Rüfüs du Sol or Elderbrook.

Julia’s distinct musical journey began at a young age as a guitarist in a number of bands. This passion for music remained a constant theme in her life and one which led her to an ultimately career-defining decision. While studying Electrical Engineering Julia was also working nights in the top sound studios of Rio de Janeiro. It soon became clear that she’d have to decide on just one of these pursuits. Fortunately for the world of music she chose the studio route and has never looked back.

An assistant engineer at just 18, Julia’s prodigious talent was acknowledged as she contributed to both an official Grammy and Latin Grammy win in Brazil. Today, she remains a Voting Member of the Recording Academy – based on her keen ability to discern what’s hot on the global music scene.

Global Influence in Electronic Music:

Julia’s global impact continued to develop when she relocated to Berlin at the age of 20, where she effortlessly established herself in the world capital of electronic music. In 2019, she secured a residency at the legendary Riverside Studios, sharing space with iconic artists like Moguai, Pan-Pot, Booka Shade, and Parcels.

Collaborating with Artist of the Year, Anyma, gave Julia a chance to showcase her virtuosity in mixing and mastering. She has left an indelible impact on the distinctive sound of the renowned Afterlife label. It’s easy to see why, as electronic music connoisseurs have become hooked on the newfound clarity and definition she has brought to the genre.

Julia’s mixing and mastering catalog now comprises work which has accrued well over a billion streams, putting her in the top 1% of engineers worldwide.

Breaking Barriers:

As a 27-year-old female engineer in a male-dominated industry, Julia fearlessly asserts herself: her presence is felt on dance floors worldwide. Furthermore, coming from the global south, Julia injects fresh energy into what is sometimes perceived as an elitist music scene. Her commitment to community building and breaking barriers is exemplified through her Patreon, where she generously shares her skills and experiences to an ever growing audience of young, often female members, inspiring a new generation of engineers.

Advocacy and Community Engagement:

Julia is a proud member of the Female Producer Collective, where she continues to shatter stereotypes and demonstrate that anything is possible for young women behind the boards. Her dedication to giving back extends beyond her music, actively encouraging and mentoring young engineers, creating a more inclusive and diverse future for the industry.
