Can you tell us about the SAE course and what makes it special?

The Web Development course at SAE offers a comprehensive learning path, starting with front-end development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and moving into UX/UI design principles, accessibility, and database management. It also covers back-end development (PHP, MySQL, MongoDB) and mobile app development using Android Studio and Java. Students learn the full-stack, from project planning and usability testing to deploying secure and functional websites.

The course emphasises collaborative projects, digital marketing, and Research and Development (R&D), preparing students for real-world industry demands.

How do students learn about website security in the course?

Students learn to secure websites by understanding database management, credential validation, and secure data storage. For example, they use MySQL and MongoDB to handle login credentials and store user data securely. They also study back-end programming languages like PHP and Java to enhance security measures.

What is the structure of the course?

The course is a two-year accelerated programme, divided into six trimesters:

  • Year one: Focuses on front-end and back-end development, UX/UI design, and mobile app development.
  • Year two: Covers digital marketing, advanced projects, and R&D. Students also work on a major project to showcase their skills.

Are there industry connections that contribute to the course?

Yes, the course collaborates with industries. For instance, students recently worked on a project with Small Green, an audio company, to develop their website. These collaborations provide vital real-world experience and connections.

How do tools like Wix and WordPress impact web developers?

While tools like Wix and WordPress are useful for simple projects with limited budgets, industries often require custom-built websites for specific needs, especially when back-end functionality and security are crucial, such as in banking or e-commerce. The course trains students to build robust, tailored solutions from scratch.

What facilities are available to support students?

Students have access to desktop devices, a library with books and digital resources, and collaborative spaces for projects. These facilities equip students with the tools they need for development and learning.

Are there opportunities for cross-collaboration with other courses?

Yes, Web Development students often collaborate with Film Production, Audio Production or Game Development students. For example, they create promotional websites for film projects or business websites for audio-related initiatives. These collaborations teach teamwork and how to adapt to client requirements.

What are the career paths for Web Development students?

Graduates can pursue careers as front-end developers, back-end developers, full-stack developers, mobile app developers, or online/digital marketers. The course provides a solid foundation for roles in web and app development, as well as opportunities in project management and UX/UI design.

What was your most rewarding moment as a lecturer?

Seeing students grow and succeed is the most rewarding. Recently, one student won an SAE award and expressed gratitude for the guidance and motivation provided throughout the course. Moments like these make teaching incredibly fulfilling.

What advice would you give to someone starting a career in web development?

Be patient, work hard, and focus on continuous learning. Collaborate with others, share responsibilities, and develop strong foundational knowledge. These skills will help you adapt to the fast-evolving technology landscape.
