Who is the film course for and what makes it special?
Our film course is for anyone interested in film, whether they have a
background in it or not.
It’s a great opportunity to learn about both the technical and
storytelling aspects of filmmaking.
We cover everything from creating a compelling narrative to getting into festivals, crowdfunding, and handling the necessary paperwork. By the end of the course, students should have a clear idea of what role in the film industry they might want to specialise in.
Can you give an overview of what students do during the two years?
We start with the fundamentals, where students learn the
technical skills and storytelling techniques needed for filmmaking.
They collaborate on projects such as documentaries and fiction films while gaining insight into the film industry. Then, in the second year, students specialise in a particular area, allowing them to focus on more complex filmmaking projects and in-depth research in their chosen field.
Do students collaborate with others on their films?
Yes, students collaborate with each other, working on each other’s films to experience different roles. By the second year, they have a strong understanding of these roles and can focus on the areas where they excel. Collaboration is highly encouraged, and students are given many opportunities to help each other and participate in various projects.
Do you have examples of industry connections that contribute to the
course?
We have strong connections with industry professionals who work with our students, providing real-world advice and context. We’ve also partnered with a studio, giving students the opportunity to work with actors and understand the challenges of directing. We continue to build these industry links to provide valuable hands-on experiences for our students.
What facilities are available to support students’ learning and development?
Students have access to industry-standard cameras, lighting, and editing programmes, allowing them to gain hands-on technical experience. There are also studio spaces available for students to use when creating their projects.
Is there collaboration with students from other courses?
Collaboration with other disciplines is encouraged, and being in a creative environment provides plenty of opportunities for it. Students are advised to actively seek out these collaborations both within and outside of the course, as they often lead to lasting professional relationships.
What’s your best piece of advice for someone wanting to start a career in film?
Be curious about the different roles in the industry, and don’t limit yourself to one path.
Be humble and a good collaborator, as filmmaking is always a team effort. Rely on others’ skills, and be willing to learn from them.
