Core skills acquired on a degree can vary as there are multiple platforms, roles and industries that a course enables students to engage with. However, a unifying thread between them is how many are able to deploy strategies on digital channels to attract engagement, an important asset for anyone studying a digital media marketing course.

In our blog, we’ll explore the various content creation fields and the skills studying content creation will hone.

Graduates who study digital media marketing courses can embark on and enjoy a multitude of career paths.

As we’ve seen, studying content creation can leave professionals with a range of skills and knowledge that can be used to enhance other traditional roles in sectors inside and outside the creative industries. The abilities to create a striking online presence and engage with a potential client-base while communicating complex ideas succinctly are much in-demand.

Content creators are at the front and centre of our digital ecosystem, whether it be working as an online influencer to creating social media strategies for brands and businesses.

As we will see, ‘content creation’ is a broad term and captures a variety of abilities. Here are some of the core skills studying a digital media marketing course can lead to.

Content editing

This is the skill of manipulating and updating content for a digital platform or website. Traditionally, this would refer to written text and articles but content has now evolved to incorporate audio, video, graphics, user-generated content and much more.

Certain content forms are more engaging on particular platforms so an ability to recognise this and creatively tailor where appropriate is key. For example, short-form videos are most suitable for YouTube shorts, Instagram reels and TikTok while graphics need to be of a certain size to work on LinkedIn or Facebook.

Photography

Studying a digital media marketing course will give students the chance to discover the basic skills of composing, editing digital images and the principles of visual language.

Students will also cover core topics outside of the creative process including intellectual property and copyright within creative media.

SAE Content Creation and Online Marketing student Oliver Crowe is among our content creation students at our Leamington Spa campus. He enjoyed work experience taking photos documenting the opening of new co-working space, Fold alongside the Ikigai Japanese Festival.

Marketing campaigns and promotion

Communication is an integral part of working in content creation and many of those studying a digital media marketing course will be well-versed in conveying ideas and stories as part of marketing campaigns.

An understanding of email marketing, paid social media campaigns and e-commerce platforms can be essential alongside knowing how to optimise product descriptions and website pages to enhance sales.

Creating engaging content can go a long way in attracting customers while also underline a brand’s credibility and its benefits.

Video

Short-form content is an integral part of our digital landscape, meaning videographers and editors can be in high-demand. A knack and knowledge of creating an engaging video can help organisations or influencers boost their audience, sell products and create a community around them.

By exploring a range of video production styles, students will get hands-on experience across the production and post-production stages of a project, learning how to plan and make a video for different digital marketing purposes.

Our alumnus James Garrett has worked as a content creator since completing his studies, often producing video for SAE.

Social Media Manager

SAE Music Business student Tania Lupez

Social media management involves a suite of skills, from editing and tailoring imagery and written content for online posts to understanding data analytics and performance. Live streaming, user generated content, running polls, tutorials and ‘how-to’s’ are all within their remit.

Tania Lapuz is a Music Business alumna at SAE London who managed the social media for Keisher Downie’s company, She Music Global. This business specialised in live bands for both wedding music and event services.

Writing/Blogging

Writing is a core skill for content creatives, meaning compelling copy or editorial can do wonders to enhance a promotional or marketing campaign.

Written text for use online often needs to be accompanied by a knowledge of search engine optimisation (or SEO) for creatives to get the most from it when publishing or editing web pages. Despite video dominating social media, an ability to write an attention-grabbing headline, YouTube video description, or LinkedIn post is still very important.

Audio Editing

Space Between the Notes podcast

As part of SAE’s course, students will learn how to prepare and facilitate interviews while producing and publishing content, with a particular focus on podcasting.

As they develop an understanding of the language and techniques used by interviewers, they will also learn the best ways to ready content for online publication on the web, becoming effective at using post-production tools for editing.

Space Between the Notes is a previous podcast launched by students at our Glasgow campus, a series that explores the challenges and opportunities of working as a creative.
