SAE Liverpool’s Jacaranda Campus Label pilot has provided students with opportunities to understand how record labels work and the city’s local live music scene.
The initiative saw 30 students at our SAE Liverpool campus get involved with the project which led to numerous releases, live performance videos and live band nights.
The collaboration with local music business Jacaranda not only gave students access to Liverpool’s vibrant music scene but also valuable industry experience in a supportive environment mirroring real-world workflows and scenarios.
Jon Withall, SAE Audio Production Lecturer, said: “From offering experience of hands-on projects to aligning their learning with industry expectations, the label has been a brilliant way to help students hone their skills.”
“In many, it has instilled an entrepreneurial mindset and helped them develop their networks, both of which are crucial when looking to launch industry careers.”
Jacob Sharp was one of the SAE students who was involved in the label.
He said: “Getting in with the label gave me the opportunity to work alongside like-minded, passionate and enthusiastic creatives in producing the well known snapshot of Liverpool’s bubbling live music scene – The Basement Tapes. Along with debuting the rising local outfit – The Kites – with their first single Just Say When, I’ve since gone on to organise and produce at the production house of a fantastic local creative centre, the Liverpool Lighthouse Studio.”
SAE student Mya Angel said: “The initiative has given me great opportunities, from working in different roles and collaborating with fellow students to gaining real-world experience with industry professionals.”
“With Jon and Iain S Bruce’s support, I’ve grown both creatively and professionally with the guidance of their great mentoring. I’d highly recommend it to any student looking to expand their expertise, learn and build a career in the industry!”
Student Edward Wearing said: “Working on the Basement Tapes for the Jacaranda Campus Label was an invaluable experience. The opportunity allowed me to gain familiarity with the workflow and equipment used in a live event setting, helping me to aquire the necessary skills to move into professional audio. The value of networking through Basement Tapes is equally as important, I gained full time employment within the live sound industry as a direct result of the contacts I acquired during my work with the label.”
Over the course of the initiative, six singles were released, numerous live performances videos produced alongside live gigs and social events with some students finding further opportunities through their involvement.
