SAE students enjoy collaborative gaming experiences at Uni Jam

SAE Game Development students joined peers from different institutions to gain invaluable collaborative experiences as part of the Uni Jam event.

SAE students took part alongside students from Goldsmith’s, ICMP, ACM, and the London College of Music.

Uni Jam aims to bring together creatives from different universities to make and collaborate in gaming events.

Events took place at different institutions including SAE where students could hone their skills and expand their networks with like-minded individuals.

Shanel Draey, Game Art and Animation student, said: “Joining a game jam is great because it effectively tests your skills and challenges you in unexpected ways, often leading to surprising outcomes.”

“Through this experience, I’ve learned the right workflows and pipelines, which allowed me to collaborate effectively with my team to create a game.”

“Participating in the Uni Jam helped me refine my skills and work alongside other game programmers and artists. This collaboration has been invaluable for networking and building connections that will greatly benefit my future career.”

Antonia Forster, Senior Advocate at Unity Technologies specialises in VR, AR, and web development and visited SAE to help hackers and jammers create games using Unity.

Antonia said: “For those interested in game development but feeling intimidated or unsure if they belong, my advice is to consider learning to code, as it’s a valuable skill, though not absolutely necessary – you can also use visual scripting to build games.”

“Coding is similar to learning a new language, like German or Spanish, and you don’t need advanced math skills, which is a common misconception.”

“Anyone can learn to code. I’ve seen people at all stages of life, from career changers to children, successfully become programmers. There’s no age limit for learning to code or making games, and doing so can open up many exciting opportunities. Personally, I highly recommend it.”

Hamie Nouri is a Game Programming and Game Design Lecturer at SAE and helped bring the Uni Jam together.

He said: “Participating in a game jam not only helps build networks and skills but also offers opportunities to collaborate with industry professionals and enhance portfolios.”

“Participating involves working closely with a team, which helps build networks and often provides opportunities to work closely with industry professionals and experts. This experience can be incredibly valuable for networking, enhancing skills, and gaining practical knowledge.”

This event was aligned with the GMTK (Game Maker’s Toolkit) Game Jam, a globally recognised game design challenge hosted by a renowned game designer who also runs a popular YouTube channel.
