SAE Game Art and Animation students studying in Glasgow had the opportunity to gain valuable industry insights by attending the Move Summit.
Held in Edinburgh, the conference is billed as Scotland’s leading animation event, bringing together creatives from film, TV, advertising, games, and the visual arts.
The conference is all about celebrating animation and the art of making things move, while also giving industry professionals, students, educators, and support agencies a chance to connect and get inspired.
Oskar Langley, Game Art and Animation Lecturer, said: “I was at the event last week with my students, and it was a fantastic experience. One of the best things about Move Summit is its focus on students -there’s a whole day dedicated to talks and sessions just for them called ‘Emerging Talent Day’ where it’s not open to industry members so the talks can be tailored for the next generation.”
“It’s a great chance to hear from industry pros, learn about career paths, and pick up valuable insights into the world of animation. It gives the first years a broad overview of the industry, with some specialised talks which can begin to give the students a taste for what they might want to specialise in later on the course. In addition, for second years, it’s a prime opportunity for students to network with industry and align their projects with what can make them as appealing as possible to industry.”
Those students who attended had a fantastic experience at the event.
Commenting, Jimmy Lee, a first year student, said: “The talks were inspiring and insightful for someone who’s trying to figure out their path in the industry. I really enjoyed the variety in the talks!”
Kris Hastie, another first year, said: “I learned a lot of new things relevant to what we’re learning about in class. The talk from Peter Dodd about 2D Animation was really cool!”
Venus Wong, a second year student, said: “I did the creative challenge and it was pretty great. I actually made a picture with a few other artists from different local schools. It was awesome to get the chance to collaborate with them.”
Second year student Ishaal Farloqi said: “The 2D talk at the end was quite insightful, it was great to see the workflow done right there and then.”
Eoghan MacArthur, a second year student, said: “Oh my God. Peter Dodd. What an amazing animator. It was very eye-opening. Totally fantastic. I learnt a lot of new things. The whole experience was invaluable. If you didn’t go it was a mistake. The resources and connections I gained will definitely be used.”
